Surgical Weight Loss Options

  • Medical Weight Loss

Medical weight loss is helping people lose weight without surgical intervention. Our program specializes not only in surgical weight loss, but also helping people who may not qualify for or want surgery. We also help those who have had surgery but gained weight back and need help to get back on track.

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve

During this procedure the surgeon removes about 75% of the stomach from the body and creates a small “tube or “sleeve” which serves as the new stomach. This smaller structure holds less food, resulting in weight loss. Sleeve gastrectomy does not bypass the small intestine, so the absorption of nutrients and calories is not affected.

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
    (Roux-en-Y)

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most common and successful type of gastric bypass available. During this procedure, the surgeon takes part of the stomach and creates a small pouch, which will become the only part of the stomach to receive food. Next, a Y-shaped portion of the small intestine is attached to the pouch, which allows food to bypass the remaining part of the stomach and lower segment of the small intestine. The main part of the stomach continues to make digestive juices and is reattached to the small intestine. Because food now moves from the small pouch to a shortened part of the small intestine, fewer calories and nutrients are absorbed by the body, resulting in weight loss.

  • Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch

For this procedure, the surgeon begins by removing a large part of the stomach, but leaves the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum) intact. Next, the surgeon closes off the middle portion of the small intestine and attaches the last part directly to the duodenum, which completes the “switch” of the procedure. The separated part of the intestine is reattached to the end of the new section so bile and digestive juices can flow into this part of the intestine. Because of these changes, food will bypass most of the small intestine. The limited absorption of calories and nutrients, as well as the smaller stomach size, results in weight loss.

  • Revision Surgery

Normally, bariatric surgery is very successful helping patients achieve weight loss with little complications. While the vast majority of bariatric surgeries are successful, there are a small number of times when patients may experience problems with the procedure, or may not lose the expected amount of weight. If this happens, a bariatric revision surgery may be necessary to repair or fine tune the original surgical procedure. It’s important to remember that obesity is a chronic disease, and the only failure is giving up. If a previous surgery was not effective for you, our doctors will work with you to identify any additional treatment options.

  • Gastric Band Fills and Care

A band fill is when a doctor takes a syringe filled with saline and inserts it into the existing port under the patient's skin. The port is attached to a tube which runs all the way to the band around the top part of the stomach. The doctor will inject a specific amount of saline through the port, which will tighten the band and make the patient feel full when eating less food than in the past.

  • Bariatric Surgery Conversions

A conversion surgery may be necessary when a patient has had numerous band fills and is still gaining weight. In this situation, the patient and medical staff member will have a thorough discussion about which surgery will be the most effective. Once a decision has been made, the patient will have the band removed and then one of the surgical procedures will be performed.
